On the 33rd episode of Go Book Yourself, the podcast that helps you Master Writing, Marketing, and Publishing One Byte at a Time, we are putting negative writing self-talk out of its misery with helpful and insightful responses you can say to yourself. Your critical alter-ego won’t stand a chance.
We don’t know one writer who sails through their craft completely on an even keel and feeling 100% about their ideas, efforts, understanding, and results. So if you feel like you are less than in this area, be assured that you are not alone. If you were to stand in a crowded room and scream out your writing vulnerabilities, you would hear an echo back of challenges that would sound eerily close to yours.
File these three ready responses away to beat back the pessimist that loves nothing more than to beat up you and your writing. BTW, of course, there are more. You just have to listen ;)
- Remember, we are groomed not to accept mediocrity. It forces us to push ourselves, and in this state, we don’t produce our best results. So cut yourself a break and build in self-care and time for reflection on your work, and even just to walk away when you are creating.
- Not getting a publishing deal doesn’t mean that you haven’t written a quality book.
- Sharing your story is self-care, and there is no guilt in self-care. That’s the rule, man. We didn’t make it up!
Writing can be the most blissful experience of your life as you wring out all the ideas and aspirations in your head. But it can also be a tremendous trudging uphill, where you fight to extract genius, and doing so leaves you cold and longing. To experience more of the joy, you must keep your mind conditioned to believe you can accomplish anything. This means combatting thoughts that are harmful to you and your writing. Get in the habit of excusing these thoughts through daily meditation or meditating as you hit the page, and you will empower your best writing.
